There are 4 routes to drive up to Monteverde (see map), all are gravel roads and are approximately 35 Km (20 miles) long:
- TILARAN Ideal for those coming from Arenal – La Fortuna area. Get to Tilarán, continue to Quebrada Grande, then CABECERAS and head to LAS NUBES. Pass LAS NUBES 7 Km and you´ll find yourself at TERRA VIVA.
- Las Juntas Ideal for those coming from Liberia or Nicoya. South of Cañas, on the PanAm Highway, look for the sign to Las Juntas. Continue on the road up the mountain, known as the road to Monteverde. A few Kms after the pavement ends, turn to EL DOS, then head to CABECERAS and to LAS NUBES. Pass LAS NUBES 7 Km and you´ll find yourself at TERRA VIVA.
- Lagarto The least used, but very convenient if you miss route 1 or route 2. It´s the next turn, south of río Lagartos.
- Sardinal Ideal for those coming from the south, like San José , Jacó, Quepos, Dominical, etc. 15 Km north of the Puntarenas turn, follow the Pan Am Highway. Turn right to SARDINAL. This will take you straight into Santa Elena town.
